How much is it going to cost? That depends on your taste. We aren’t charging for shit. A frugal traveler in Mexico can eat for about 20 dollars per day. If you drink, plan to spend at least that much on beer. Want to stay in a decent hotel with a pool and bar? Seventy-five to 100 dollars per night is the norm. Bring a sleeping bag and you could sleep in a palapa with five strangers for around three bucks a night. If you like rough titty bars and great seafood, bring your pesos, brother.
Do I need a passport? Yes. Click here to visit the US Department of State and read the FAQ's on the subject.
Do cell phones work down there? Almost. Like everything and everyone else in Baja, they work some of the time. Plan on making plans. If you get your service upgraded to “International” on Cingular, it is about five bucks a month and service is decent in major cities like TJ, Ensenada, San Felipe and Mexicali. Between big towns the coverage is sporadic at best. To make a call to the USA you dial “001” then the area code and the number (example: 001 310 555 1212.) Bottom line: they work pretty well, but don’t depend on it. If you’re traveling with friends, a list of predetermined meeting and stopping spots is a good idea.
